Bulging Disc

A bulging disc is used to describe a certain type of low back or neck injury.  It is commonly referred to as a slipped disc. The spinal discs which are like cushions between your bones, do not actually slip.  However, the soft centre part of the disc may bulge out from between the bones.  Pain can result when this tear or fragment pinches a nerve.  A slipped disc can be similar to degenerative disc disease. Bulging discs are common in the neck or low back.

Causes of a Bulging Disc

Many reasons can cause and increase the risk of slipped disc.  Lifestyle habits such as lack of regular exercise, smoking,  and poor nutrition may contribute to poor disc health. Daily wear and tear through injury or trauma, incorrect lifting techniques, or poor posture can further affect the disc.  A single sudden movement, or strain such as coughing or bending, may cause a slipped disc.

Bulging discs usually affect people between the ages of 30 and 40.  Pain at the site of the disc bulge, numbness or pain radiating down the leg is a common experience with those suffering with a disc bulge in the low back. Pain at the site of the disc bulge, numbness or pain radiating down the arms is a common experience with those suffering with a disc bulge in the neck. In severe cases of a low back slipped disc, you may experience changes in your bowel or bladder function and may have difficulty with sexual function.
